Sexual Assault Hospital Advocacy
SafePlace offers hospital accompaniment and advocacy to recent adult and adolescent sexual assault survivors in Travis County. Sexual assault advocates are dispatched through our hotline and provide 24/7 coverage.
Advocates provide face-to-face crisis intervention and compassionate, confidential support to survivors and loved ones in the emergency room. Their role is crucial: introducing survivors to their rights as crime victims and orienting them to the criminal justice system, assessing for safety, acting as a liaison between the survivor and medical staff and law enforcement, and explaining the effects of trauma. Advocates offer the survivor her or his legal right to have an advocate in the room during the sexual assault exam and are trained to explain medical and legal options so that the survivor can make informed choices.
