The holidays are an especially difficult time for victims of domestic and sexual violence. Starting their lives over can lead to great financial hardship and many families find themselves on the brink of homelessness with scarcely any resources at ther disposal. SafePlace has two programs to help our clients take part in the joy and magic of the holiday season: Sponsor a Family and Shop for the Shelter. We hope you'll join us.
Sponsor a Family Program:
Our Sponsor a Family program matches you or your group with a family or individual who is a client at SafePlace. You are provided with a personal wish list to help you shop for families or individuals living in our transitional housing or whom we serve through our counseling program. Each family includes at least one SafePlace client. They may be women, men or children who are victims of sexual or domestic abuse. Due to our strict privacy and confidentiality policies, you will not meet the family you are sponsoring, but please be assured that our Holiday Program Coordinator personally hands them their gifts after you’ve delivered them to us.
Shop for the Shelter Program:
Our Shop for the Shelter program fills the needs of our shelter clients and families who will not be able to participate in the Sponsor A Family program due to time constraints. All donations collected for this program are displayed in the shelter, and our shelter clients pick gifts for their family members staying with us – parents pick for their children, and the kiddos get to pick for their parents. The need for this program is great and all donations are much appreciated.
If you aren't a shopper but would like to help, we encourage you to donate gift cards in any amount so that our clients can buy groceries and other essentials, or take their family out for some much-needed fun with gift cards for movie tickets and restaurants.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities during the holidays including warehouse volunteers to assist in gathering and organizing holiday gifts, gift receiver and distributor volunteers, and gift wrapping volunteers.
