Make a Difference

All of us, working together can help end sexual and domestic violence. Read our ideas below and share your own plans with us.  With your permission, we will add them to our website.  If you would like, register with our site then sign up for one of our e-newsletters to keep up with what we are doing in Austin and how the community is helping.

You can "Make a Difference" as an individual

  • Share information on resources available. Guide someone to the I Need Help section of our website or the 24-hour hotline.
  • Believe a friend or loved one who reaches out. Learn how to give support to a survivor of sexual or domestic violence.
  • Learn the myths and realities or red flags of sexual and domestic violence; share these with friends and family.
  • Give time, money or items to SafePlace - learn what your gift provides or donate today!
  • If you are a survivor, share your story with us so your story can help the community understand the issues and how we can affect change.

You can "Make a Difference" in your family

  • Practice non-violence and respect in all your relationships. Be a role model of a healthy relationship for your children or grandchildren.
  • Monitor your teens and pre-teens for red flags in their dating relationships. Talk to them about violent and controlling behaviors.
  • Pay attention to signs of abuse happening to those who rely on others for care.

You can “Make a Difference” in your Community

  • Do not allow others to stereotype survivors—correct friends, co-workers and family members when you hear these misconceptions.
  • Ask your faith leader, employer or health care provider to sponsor a training on partner violence and display SafePlace materials.
  • Co-sponsor events with SafePlace - community fundraisers, awareness events and donation drives.
  • Ask your healthcare provider to screen for sexual assault and domestic violence.
