Fair Representative
Educate the public by setting up and staffing SafePlace information booths at health fairs and festivals.
Qualifications: Must enjoy talking with people and have an in-depth knowledge of SafePlace services and issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault.
Additional Training: Community Education training (approximately 40 hrs).
Program/Supervisor: Community Education Coordinator
Location: Varies
Time Commitment: Typically 2-3 hr shifts.
Public Awareness Events
Play a supportive role in Public Awareness Events designed to educate the public on sexual and domestic violence issues, give a voice to all survivors and encourage the community to serve as courageous bystanders to help end violence where it begins.
Responsibilities: Assist in event planning, organization, and advertisement, donation request, pick-up and delivery of donations and materials, event site set-up and clean-up, assist in collaborating with community partners and various other responsibilities as needed.
AdditionalTraining: Community Education Program Orientation (approximately one hr).
Program/Supervisor: Community Education Administration Assistant/Event Organizer
Time Commitment: Dependent upon event and level of involvement.
Speakers Bureau
Educate the public by making presentations about SafePlace services, domestic violence and sexual assault. Presentation times can range from 15 minutes to 1 hour.
Qualifications: Must enjoy talking with people and have an in-depth knowledge of SafePlace services and issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault.
Additional Training: Community Education Orientation (approximately one hr) and Speakers Bureau Training (12 hrs).
Program/Supervisor: Community Education Assistant
Time Commitment: Must volunteer for at least six months after Volunteer Training before joining the Speaker’s Bureau.
Entertainment Facilitator
Facilitate adult Bingo night and/or kids’ movie night, prizes to raffle, snacks and movies are provided by SafePlace.
Qualifications: Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Additional Training: Children’s Program training required for kids’ movie night.
Program/Supervisor:Grove Place Community Services
Location:Grove Place
Time Commitment: 1.5 to 2 hours in the evening, days and times to be determined, minimum commitment is one evening of Bingo or a movie.
Shelter House Support
Volunteer at the family shelter and support our clients by providing basic needs and assisting with the daily operations of the shelter.
Responsibilities: Interact with clients by distributing resident medication boxes, household items, making copies, sending faxes and other tasks as needed by residents and staff. Assist with security gates and cameras and commissary needs (distributing food & groceries to shelter residents). Additional duties may include assisting staff with Family Night activities.
Qualifications: Friendly, flexible personality, must be comfortable working with all kinds of people regardless of race, religion, gender or sexuality.
AdditionalTraining: House Support Volunteer Orientation and completion of one-on-one training with House Support Manager and shadowing of a staff member.
Program/Supervisor:Kelly White Emergency Shelter House Support Manager
Location: SafePlace’s Emergency Shelter
Time Commitment: Shifts are available weekdays, evenings and weekends from 8am-8pm; volunteers are needed most M-F 3pm-8pm. Minimum of two 4-hour shifts per month for 6 months.
After School Program Volunteer
Provide a positive relationship and assistance with. after school indoor/outdoor activities for children 5 years of age and older.
Responsibilities: The activities focus on building social skills, non-violent relationships, problem-solving skills, and self-esteem. Regular activities include arts & crafts, board games, group games, homework time, and trips to off site locations (e.g. area parks).
Qualifications: Must enjoy active indoor/outdoor activities and working with a diverse group of school age children. 18 and older
Additional Training: Children’s Services training (approximately 40 hours).
Program/Supervisor: Children’s Services Advocacy Manager
Location: Meet at Family Shelter or Supportive Housing, activities can take place off site
Time Commitment: Commitment Monday - Friday (3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
Legal Advocate
Provide assistance to clients going through the criminal justice system.
Responsibilities: Provide emotional support and information through court accompaniment.
Qualifications: An outgoing personality, responsible self-starters, who can work without supervision on occasion and quick thinkers for diverse client situations.
Additional Training: Program training which includes an eight-hour classroom training, four-hour courthouse training and three four-hour observation shifts; one Tuesday morning and two Friday mornings.
Program/Supervisor:Community Advocacy’s Senior Legal Advocate
Time Commitment: This volunteer position requires regular volunteer shifts on Tuesday and/or Friday mornings, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eight hours per month for at least one year after the completion of training.
Financial Mentors
Meet individually with clients to provide assistance with financial issues, including but not limited to: budgeting, prioritizing spending, reading credit reports and understanding how one’s credit history will affect future financial options
Responsibilities: Provide information, resources and support to SafePlace clients seeking financial counseling.
Qualifications: Experience or background in financial counseling. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Additional Training: Brief training with the Life Skills Volunteer Supervisor and attendance at sessions 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 of the 40-Hour Training.
Program/Supervisor: Transitional Services Program’s LifeSkills
Location:SafePlaceResourceCenter
Time Commitment: Minimum commitment is 3 months, 4-6 hours a month or "as needed".
Grove Place Children’s Activities
Play games and have fun with the younger children while their parents are attending class Life Skills workshops and classes. Children are provided a snack and are engaged in educational activities.
Additional Training: Children’s Services Program training (4 hours).
Program/Supervisor: Grove Place Community Services Coordinator
Location:Grove Place
Time Commitment: One day a week for 1-2 hours. Days/times as needed. Flexibility around availability of volunteer; this position is available on an “as needed basis.”
Children’s Evening Groups
Staff and volunteers facilitate psycho-educational groups for children (infant to teens).
Responsibilities: Volunteers help by facilitating a group on their own or co-facilitation with another staff or volunteer.
Qualifications: Comfort with topics such as domestic violence, conflict resolution, safety, drug/alcohol prevention, self esteem, and healthy relationships. 18 and older.
Additional Training: Children’s Services Program training

Location: Family Shelter, ResourceCenter, Supportive Housing
Time Commitment: Eight hours per month for at least six months after the completion of training.
Family Shelter: Thursdays (6:00 – 7:00 pm)
ResourceCenter: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (6:30 –8:00 pm)
Supportive Housing: Tuesday, Wednesday (6:00 - 8:30 pm)
Children’s Life Skills Groups
Staff and volunteers provide psycho-educational groups following a curriculum set up to help build the LifeSkills of the children attending the program. The topics discussed are similar to those being discussed in the adult LifeSkills classes attended by the parents. Topics such as managing stress, proper nutrition, decision-making, safety and many other topics are covered.
Qualifications: Comfort with topics such as domestic violence, conflict resolution, safety, drug/alcohol prevention, self esteem, and healthy relationships. 18 and older.
Additional Training: Children’s Services Program training, an orientation and observation.
Program/Supervisor: Children’s Activity Manager
Location: Supportive Housing
Time Commitment: Eight hours per month for at least six months after the completion of training.
Sexual Assault Hospital Advocate
Meet sexual assault survivors at the hospital to provide face-to-face support, information, and advocacy regarding medical and legal procedures.
Responsibilities: Hospital Advocates are on call during non-business hours with the following shifts: weeknights 8 p.m.–7 a.m., Friday, 8 pm-Saturday 8 am, Saturday 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., Saturday 5:30 p.m.–Sunday 8 am, Sunday 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., Sunday 5:30 p.m.–Monday 7 a.m. Each advocate may receive a pager during their shifts or can use their personal cell phone or be contacted at their home.
Qualifications: Bilingual Spanish-English speaking volunteers especially needed. 18 and older
Additional Training: Hospital orientation and program training (6 hours). Must do 2 buddy shifts and observe before being on your own; be available to go to the hospital during evening or daytime shift and communicate any problems or concerns to support staff.
Program/Supervisor: Sexual Assault Community Advocacy Coordinator
Time Commitment: Minimum commitment is 2 shifts per month for at least six months after the completion of training. One shift must be during the week and one shift on the weekends.
Grove Place LifeSkills Workshop Facilitator
Facilitate engaging, informative and participatory LifeSkills workshops.
Qualifications: Good facilitation skills. Good knowledge of subject matter. Experience with groups of non-traditional adult learners.Willingness to promote experiential learning. SafePlace has a curriculum, but volunteer is welcome to work from her/his materials as well. Ability to facilitate in Spanish (fluent speaker) a plus.
Additional Training: Meet with Volunteer Services Manager for volunteer interview.
