Trainings & Presentations
SafePlace offers trainings and presentations about topics relating to sexual assault and domestic violence in the community. Guided trainings are offered throughout Texas for civic, cultural and faith-based organizations including law enforcement, service providers, counselors, health care professionals and educators.
This outreach is vital to creating a community that recognizes and responds to sexual and domestic violence in the best way to support the survivor and the community as a whole.
Community Education Program
Community Event Outreach
SafePlace staff and volunteers are available to represent the agency with materials and information for the community at booths during events such as school or job fairs where attendees are invited to learn about resources available in the Austin community.
Professional Training for First Responders
Trained staff provide professional trainings to sexual assault and domestic violence first responders such as law enforcement, attorneys, health care providers, caregivers, employers, faith leaders and child care workers.
Domestic Violence & Pregnancy: Effective Screening and Intervention
This online training for health care providers,explores the fundamental domestic violence knowledge required to identify, treat, document and, if necessary, report domestic abuse. CNEs (Texas) and CEUs (Texas) are available. Access the class.
Disability Services Program
Abuse Prevention & Sexuality Education
Increases awareness about sexual, domestic and caregiver abuse to empower people to protect themselves and plan for personal safety. Trainings are customized to the learning needs of each group and are available throughout Texas. Topics include:
Disability Awareness Training for Professionals & Family Members
Training for rape crisis centers & domestic violence shelters:
- Disability awareness
- Strategies for outreaching to persons with disabilities
- Effectively serving abuse survivors with disabilities
- Designing physically and programmatically accessible services.
Professionals in the Disability Field & Family Members:
- Risks of abuse faced by many people with disabilities
- Strategies for preventing abuse
- Techniques for providing sexuality education
- Detecting, reporting and responding to disclosures of abuse
“Train the Trainer” on Abuse Prevention & Students with Disabilities
A statewide training for school personnel that will empower personnel to share what they learned with others in the school. Topics include:
- Vulnerability factors faced by people with disabilities
- Indicators of abuse
- Responding to disclosures
- Reporting abuse
- Abuse prevention strategies for students with disabilities
- Hands-on experience for workshop participants
Expect Respect Program
The Expect Respect Program Training
The Expect Respect Program Training is designed to assist school personnel and community partners in developing a comprehensive dating violence prevention program. The fee for this 12-hour (2 day) training is $2,000 plus travel expenses and includes pre and post–training consultation and two copies of the Expect Respect Program Manual.
Participants will increase their capacity to:
- Start or enhance an existing dating violence prevention program
- Implement Expect Respect support groups, leadership training and school-wide prevention strategies
- Strengthen community partnerships for prevention
- Develop culturally relevant prevention activities
Youth Leadership Training
Youth Leadership Training is provided in local schools and youth organizations to empower youth to become leaders in preventing dating and sexual violence, sexual harassment and bullying in their schools and communities.
- SafeTeens Youth Leadership Training -8 hours (Youth ages 11-18)
- Heroes Youth Leadership Training-4 hours (Youth ages 9-11)
The Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble
Changing Lives performs original theatre and spoken word poetry by youth for local teen audiences on topics including healthy and unhealthy relationships. Beginning its 6th season, Changing Lives is a collaboration between SafePlace and
Theatre Action Project. (Youth ages 11-18).
Teaching, Modeling and Supporting Healthy Relationships: A Conversation with Parents & Community Members
Parents have an important role in helping children develop safe and healthy relationships with friends and dating partners. Yet, as a parent, it can be difficult to start the conversation and keep it going. This session provides useful information and engages parents in a discussion on teen relationships.
Promoting Safe and Respectful Relationships in Schools/Youth Organizations: Training for School Personnel and Other Professionals
Teachers, counselors, nurses, clergy and other professionals play a crucial role in preventing dating and sexual violence and responding effectively to youth in abusive relationships. This training addresses school and organizational policies that contribute to safe and respectful environments and features educational materials that can be used in classrooms and other settings.
