Frequently Asked Questions
How much of a commitment do I have to make to volunteer?
We ask that most volunteers commit to an average of eight hours per month for at least six months. In order to volunteer in a capacity that works directly with survivors, you must successfully complete a volunteer application and criminal background check, participate in a screening interview, complete the 40-hour training and participate in program specific orientation. Some positions do not require the same amount of time commitment or training; please contact Volunteer Services for more details.
Can I volunteer with SafePlace to satisfy community service requirements?
Unfortunately, due to security and safety requirements, we do not at this time provide volunteer opportunities that will satisfy community service requirements.
When can I attend a training session?
Volunteer Training sessions are held three times a year— February, June and October. Exact dates are provided during Volunteer Orientation. View the most current training agenda.
Will I be required to pay for anything during training?
Training materials are available for a $25 fee, which helps pay for the cost of printing materials and purchasing the training book. There is also a $10 fee for a criminal background check. If you paid when you registered, a manual or book will be held for you. If the fees present an economic hardship please contact Volunteer Services.
Do I have to attend an orientation before coming to a training session?
Yes! The Volunteer Orientation meeting provides a concise overview of SafePlace and the activities in which volunteers are involved. This meeting is designed to help you decide if SafePlace is the appropriate place for you to volunteer.
How do I get an application?
Applications will be distributed at each Volunteer Orientation. They should be returned on the first session of the Volunteer Training.
What do I do if I can't attend a training session?
If you are attending the Volunteer Training you may miss no more than two classes to receive full credit for attending the 40 hour training. However, missed sessions can be made up in future volunteer training sessions.
Are there opportunities at SafePlace for men to volunteer?
Yes! Men participate in all aspects of volunteering at SafePlace.
Are there opportunities for large groups to volunteer?
Yes! Many groups volunteer at SafePlace. It is a great team building opportunity and a great way for groups to give back to the community. Fill out the short survey to detail your interests and someone will contact you.
Can I bring food to the training?
Coffee, water and light snacks will be provided at each training class. Feel free to bring your dinner and eat during training. We do ask that you help keep our Resource Center clean.
