Volunteering
Important note * Due to staffing changes in the Spring and Summer of 2010, as well as other developments, the Volunteer Services Department is offering a modified Orientation and Training Schedule for 2010. We will not be offering orientations during the months of March, April and May or the June 40-Hour Training. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time and thank you for your interest in supporting SafePlace.
Volunteers at SafePlace are often a survivor’s first hope--offering much-needed support during a rape examination or a compassionate, informative presence at court or at the shelter.
A number of volunteers work daily with the children of SafePlace, in the after-school programs, on-site charter school, the child development center and other areas throughout SafePlace.
Our volunteers do it all—accompany survivors to court, plan children’s birthday parties, deliver toys to SafePlace for clients for the Holiday Giving Program and much, much more. Professional volunteers provide much needed pro-bono services to our clients such as physician care, alternative healing, massage and salon services.
Our Program
Our volunteers represent SafePlace, so we believe it is important to empower each volunteer with a greater understanding of the issues surrounding sexual and domestic violence. Our hope is that volunteers benefit as much from their experience as SafePlace clients benefit from these volunteers.
Because of our sensitivity to client safety and confidentiality, volunteering with survivors, children or representing SafePlace in the community consists of a commitment to the organization which begins with attending a Volunteer Orientation, a criminal background check, an interview with the volunteer services manager and a 40 hour V0lunteer Training. There are various other volunteer opportunities with less commitment or that are more suited for groups.
Complete and submit this short form detailing your interest in either individual or group volunteer opportunities.
Frankie Fowler Volunteer Award
The Frankie Fowler Volunteer Award, named in honor of a long-serving SafePlace volunteer who has been volunteering with the agency for more than 28 years, recognizes volunteers who exemplify the dedication and commitment it takes to work toward bringing an end to sexual and domestic violence.
Each year, in April, during Volunteer Appreciation Week, SafePlace gives the award to one deserving volunteer who has been nominated and voted on by SafePlace staff.
